Chris Hutton
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Chris Hutton is enjoying a successful second career as a landscape artist after spending 35 years in global food manufacturing, where he held executive leadership roles in Quality and Supply Chain. Throughout his business career, Chris maintained a lifelong passion for the arts, including owning an art gallery while continuing to develop his skills as a landscape painter. Today, his work can be found in private and corporate collections across the United States and in several countries around the world.
Hutton begins each painting by laying out a simple grid with small reference marks to establish accurate scale and composition. He typically starts with a warm-toned underpainting, applying broad, expressive strokes that create an abstract foundation for the piece. As the painting develops, he carefully refines values, color, and composition to guide the viewer's eye naturally through the landscape. Up close, his paintings reveal energetic, abstract brushwork, yet from a distance they take on a striking sense of realism that is often compared to photography.
Over the past two decades, Hutton has studied with renowned artists Curt Walters, Rick Howell, Jeffrey Watts, Roland Roycraft, and Xiang Zhang. These experiences have helped him refine a distinctive style that combines expressive brushwork with a strong sense of realism.
Originally from Rocky Ford, Hutton earned a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Colorado State University. In 2015, he returned to Colorado and now lives in Mancos, where he has been building his own barn home and studio. Studio tours and plein air painting classes are available by appointment.
